The Under the Radar Learning Problems

Any source of homework difficulty can constitute an under the radar learning problem. The  most common reasons for homework noncompliance are difficulties in working memory and processing speed. Homework trapped children have difficulty absorbing what the teacher says. These children are like Linus in the Peanuts comic strip, listening to their teacher say “Mwa, mwa, mwa.”  They seem inattentive, but this is because they fail to retain what they just heard as new information comes in.  Because of this, they come home and do not know what they need to do. In class, the teacher is there to clarify instructions and guide them along. That cannot happen when they work at home.
The homework trapped child typically has major problems with handwriting. He cannot write quickly or neatly.  He may have heavy handwriting causing his hand to hurt.  He needs time limits to how much he must do, and full (or substantial credit) for what he has done.
